Muleshoe is a city located in Bailey County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,530. It is the county seat of Bailey CountyTemplate:GR. Muleshoe is home to the National Mule Memorial.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.9 km² (3.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,530 people, 1,595 households, and 1,178 families residing in the city. The population density is 511.4/km² (1,323.9/mi²). There are 1,802 housing units at an average density of 203.4/km² (526.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 63.27% White, 1.50% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 31.59% from other races, and 2.80% from two or more races. 53.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,595 households out of which 38.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.1% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.35.

In the city the population is spread out with 31.3% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 25.1% from 25 to 44, 19.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $25,519, and the median income for a family is $31,969. Males have a median income of $23,409 versus $16,053 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,567. 18.0% of the population and 13.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.9% of those under the age of 18 and 13.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
