Mulayam Singh Yadav (born November 21, 1939) is a politician in Uttar Pradesh, India. He has been repeatedly elected to the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly since 1967. He first became a state minister in 1977. In 1980, he became the president of the Lok Dal (People's Party) in Uttar Pradesh which later became part of the Janata Dal (People's Party). In 1982, he was elected leader of the opposition in the Uttar Pradesh legislative council. He first became chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1989, serving in that position until 1991. In 1992, he founded the Samajwadi Party(Socialist Party) and was elected chief minister in 1993, serving in that position until 1995. In 1996, he was elected to the eleventh Lok Sabha. In 1996, he became union cabinet minister (defence). During his stint as a Defence Minister, he was almost elected as the Prime Minister by the ruling combine. It is widely believed that fellow Yaduvanshi Kshatriya (Yadav) politician, Lalu Prasad Yadav scuttled his chances. In 1998, he was reelected to the Lok Sabha and again in 1999. In 2003, he was elected chief minister of Uttar Pradesh again after Mayawati resigned. He is still the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.
