Mountain Brook is a city located in Jefferson County, Alabama . As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 20,604. Mountain Brook is a particularly affluent suburb of Birmingham, and is among the wealthiest cities in the United States.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.7 km² (12.2 mi²). 31.7 km² (12.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 20,604 people, 7,998 households, and 5,974 families residing in the city. The population density is 649.9/km² (1,684.0/mi²). There are 8,268 housing units at an average density of 260.8/km² (675.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.64% White, 0.31% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.65% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.22% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,998 households out of which 36.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.0% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% are non-families. 22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.3% under the age of 18, 4.1% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $100,483, and the median income for a family is $122,647. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $39,770 for females. The per capita income for the city is $59,085. 2.9% of the population and 1.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Government

Mountain Brook has a city council/mayor/city manager system of government. The city council consists of 5 members elected at large, and the council considers most issues and appoints the police chief, the fire chief, and the city manager (with the mayor). The mayor is elected every 4 years and as of 2005 is Terry Oden. Administrative business is handled by the city manager who is appointed by the mayor and city council. As of 2005 the city manager is Sam Gaston. The Tree Commission and the Planning Commission consider specific issues and usually refer them to the city council.
