As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,623 people, 1,065 households, and 726 families residing in the community. The population density is 84.7/km² (219.3/mi²). There are 1,216 housing units at an average density of 39.3/km² (101.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 90.43% White, 8.27% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.38% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,065 households out of which 27.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% are married couples living together, 14.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
