Mount Arlington, New Jersey

Mount Arlington is a borough located in Morris County, New Jersey. It is located on the southeast shore of Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest natural lake and a major recreational resource. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 4,663.

History

While Mount Arlington is now mostly a suburban residential community, it was once a thriving resort town. In the era before the world wars and air travel it was a welcome respite for the residents of nearby New York City and Newark, NJ.

Every summer thousands would arrive by train at Landing Station, and then travel by water taxi across Lake Hopatcong to the areas many large resort hotels to escape the city heat and enjoy the famous "Mount Arlington breeze" which always cooled the summer evenings.

There was also a major amusement park, Bertrand Island, which featured a world famous carousel and roller coaster.

Geography

Mount Arlington is located at 40°54'52" North, 74°38'24" West (40.914398, -74.639865)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 7.3 km² (2.8 mi²). 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.9 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 25.44% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,663 people, 1,918 households, and 1,262 families residing in the borough. The population density is 853.3/km² (2,207.1/mi²). There are 2,039 housing units at an average density of 373.1/km² (965.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 91.42% White, 1.82% African American, 0.19% Native American, 3.82% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.27% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. 4.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,918 households out of which 28.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.2% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the borough the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 35.5% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.1 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $67,213, and the median income for a family is $79,514. Males have a median income of $53,049 versus $40,417 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $32,222. 3.3% of the population and 2.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.3% of those under the age of 18 and 3.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
