Talking Heads: 77 (1977) | More Songs About Buildings and Food (1978) | Fear of Music (1979) |
More Songs About Buildings and Food is a July 14, 1978 (see 1978 in music) art punk album by Talking Heads. The album was significantly more popular than their first, Talking Heads: 77, but still did not break the group into mainstream audiences. Driven by its rhythm section, the band's blend of funky bass, bubblegum, reggae and punk influences, with David Byrne's nerdy, off-kilter voice, established the group as a critical success known for their rabid liveshows, but still with disappointing album sales.
The album's title refers to the "Sophomore Slump" stereotype that holds that bands' second albums (such as this one) usually consist of unfinished or sub-par material from first album recording sessions, or failed attempts at recreating the hits from the first album. Also the title of the album refers to a critics review of their first album, Talking Heads '77. He said that all of their songs were about buildings and food, hence the name of their second album, making fun of that critic, "More Songs About Buildings and Food."
More Songs About Buildings and Food peaked at #29 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, while the Al Green cover "Take Me to the River" peaked at #26 on the Pop Albums chart in 1979 (see 1979 in music).
