Mooresville, North Carolina

Mooresville is a town located in Iredell County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 18,823. It is located approximately 30 minutes north of Charlotte.

Lowe's Home Improvement is headquartered in the city.

It is perhaps best known as the home of dozens of NASCAR racing teams. It also is home to the NASCAR Technical Institute.

Mooresville is located at 35°35'4" North, 80°49'13" West (35.584337, -80.820139)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 38.1 km² (14.7 mi²). 38.0 km² (14.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 18,823 people, 7,139 households, and 5,082 families residing in the town. The population density is 494.7/km² (1,281.6/mi²). There are 7,741 housing units at an average density of 203.5/km² (527.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 81.54% White, 14.23% African American, 0.36% Native American, 1.66% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.14% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 2.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,139 households out of which 39.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 12.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 24.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.7% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $42,943, and the median income for a family is $51,011. Males have a median income of $39,524 versus $24,939 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,549. 7.2% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.5% of those under the age of 18 and 12.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
