Moody Air Force Base

Moody Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Lowndes County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the area had a total population of 993.

The air base is home to the 347th Air Rescue Wing with an additional 3400 civilian and military personnel. In addition, the base is also now home to the 479th Flying Training Group that trains students to fly the T-6 Texan II. The 479th also teaches the US Air Force's Introduction to Fighter Fundamentals course, which flies the T-38C. The base personnel are not included in the census information below. The base was first established in World War 2 and long served as a major pilot-training base. U.S. President George W. Bush trained as a fighter pilot at Moody.

The life of the African American personnel of the base was immortalized in the comedy monologue with music, "Callin' Moody Field" by Miss Peaches, a rhythm and blues hit in the late 1950s.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the base has a total area of 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 993 people, 275 households, and 270 families residing in the base. The population density is 958.5/km² (2,452.6/mi²). There are 330 housing units at an average density of 318.5/km² (815.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the base is 69.49% White, 23.26% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.52% Asian, 0.40% Pacific Islander, 2.42% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. 7.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 275 households out of which 85.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 89.5% are married couples living together, 5.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 1.8% are non-families. 1.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.61 and the average family size is 3.63.

In the base the population is spread out with 45.3% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 44.1% from 25 to 44, 2.3% from 45 to 64, and 0.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 106.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.5 males.

The median income for a household in the base is $36,058, and the median income for a family is $36,058. Males have a median income of $25,758 versus $12,946 for females. The per capita income for the base is $11,452. 2.4% of the population and 2.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.1% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
