Montello, Wisconsin

Montello is a city located in Marquette County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,397. The city is located within the Town of Montello. Montello is also home to the biggest tree in all of Wisconsin.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.6 km² (2.2 mi²). 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.63% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,397 people, 591 households, and 348 families residing in the city. The population density is 282.4/km² (732.6/mi²). There are 677 housing units at an average density of 136.9/km² (355.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.13% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 1.00% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 1.15% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 2.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 591 households out of which 27.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.5% are married couples living together, 8.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families. 37.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 20.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.96.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.7% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 95.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $32,500, and the median income for a family is $43,625. Males have a median income of $29,438 versus $21,375 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,676. 9.2% of the population and 5.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.6% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
