Monongahela is a city located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,761.
Geography
Monongahela is located at 40°12'2" North, 79°55'42" West (40.200462, -79.928394)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 km² (2.1 mi²). 5.0 km² (1.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.86% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,761 people, 2,139 households, and 1,264 families residing in the city. The population density is 952.5/km² (2,472.4/mi²). There are 2,382 housing units at an average density of 476.5/km² (1,237.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.94% White, 3.26% African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,139 households out of which 23.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.0% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% are non-families. 36.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.87.
In the city the population is spread out with 20.1% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.4% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 23.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $29,060, and the median income for a family is $36,528. Males have a median income of $31,250 versus $23,911 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,903. 13.6% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
