Moira, New York

Moira is a town located in Franklin County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,857.

The Town of Moira is located on the western border of Franklin County. The town was formed in 1828 from the Town of Dickinson.

Geography

US Route ll passes across the town. The west town line is the border of St. Lawrence County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 117.1 km² (45.2 mi²). 117.1 km² (45.2 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,857 people, 1,130 households, and 775 families residing in the town. The population density is 24.4/km² (63.2/mi²). There are 1,286 housing units at an average density of 11.0/km² (28.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.07% White, 0.49% African American, 0.56% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,130 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.97.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.0% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.0% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $26,393, and the median income for a family is $33,047. Males have a median income of $29,779 versus $19,866 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,270. 18.4% of the population and 14.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.8% of those under the age of 18 and 13.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
