Mission Hills, Kansas

Mission Hills is an affluent city located in Johnson County, Kansas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,593. It is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, which is adjacent to the east. The two cities are separated by the aptly-named State Line Road. Other adjacent cities include Prairie Village, Kansas and Fairway, Kansas.

The northern area of town is dominated by opulent mansions and two private golf clubs: Mission Hills Country Club and Kansas City Country Club. The latter was the location for the 1990 Merchant Ivory film Mr. and Mrs. Bridge (1990) starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. Famous residents, past and present, include popular writers Evan S. Connell (who wrote Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge) and James Ellroy, professional golfer Tom Watson, baseball great George Brett, and The Baffler founder Thomas Frank.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²). 5.2 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. However, Brush Creek runs through the northern section of the city.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,593 people, 1,284 households, and 1,104 families residing in the city. The population density is 686.8/km² (1,782.5/mi²). There are 1,318 housing units at an average density of 251.9/km² (653.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.22% White, 0.08% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,284 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 81.2% are married couples living together, 3.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.0% are non-families. 12.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 18.1% from 25 to 44, 32.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $188,821, and the median income for a family is $200,000. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $62,440 for females. The per capita income for the city is $95,405. 1.2% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.8% of those under the age of 18 and 1.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
