Mina Mongoose

Mina Mongoose (or the provided nicknames Mina-girl, songoose and songbird (a nickname awarded to Mina because she can sing) is a fictional character appearing in the Sonic the Hedgehog Archie comics.

Her first debut issue in the Sonic Archie Comics was in issue #76 where she had been captured and rescued by Sonic the hedgehog and has grown up to be one of Archie comics' more popular characters. She is one of the two girls (the other being Princess Sally Acorn) who is competing for the affections of Sonic the Hedgehog.

General information

Mina is the 16 year old daughter of Isabella Mongoose and the now dead Arthur Mongoose. She is a school girl in love with the most renowned hero in the world. She is also a heroine in her own right who pops up every now and then. She works as a singer and babysitter.

How Mina's parents met

The couple (Isabella and Arthur) met when Isabella was being chased by Overlanders (four fingered humans who were waging war with anthropomorphic creatures). This attracted the attention of Arthur Mongoose, who came to the aid of Isabella. After this, Arthur and Isabella married, and they had their daughter on October 11, 3220. Unfortunately Arthur would die later on, but Isabella still thinks of him, and Mina still asks about him.

Mother and daughter

Isabella looks out a lot for Mina, in the sense that she is someone who is very concerned with her daughter's safety and often tries to cheer up Mina when she's down. Sometimes Mina takes her mother's advice the wrong way, and Isabella tries to prevent her daughter from doing something without too much thought, or at least tries to prevent her daughter from being hurt from something that lacked forethought. This doesn't necessarily mean her daughter lacks intellect, but every now and then Mina makes mistakes like the other characters; Isabella simply wants to help her daughter through life as much as possible. Mina loves her mother very much as well. When they were separated and her mother was roboticized, Mina tried her hardest to get her mother back. This attracted the attention of Sonic the Hedgehog who at first was someone Mina honestly did not think had a soft side at all, only to later find herself falling in love with him. Needless to say she would put her own life in danger to save her mother (she did just that in issue 90).

Unique abilities

Mina's current mainstream ability is her singing talents. King Max recruited her to sing for the troops due to her angelic voice. Since then, she's on the road to becoming an idol singer. However, being she is a mongoose, she can run a bit faster than average Mobians. Mina's speed comes from the fact she's a mongoose, which is a mongoose is a naturally fast creature. Finally, Mina has demonstrated that she can be good with kids when she's babysat orphans for Rosie (the main three she babysits include three children known as Sasha Rori and Snaggle).

Friends

Good friends of Mina Mongoose would include: Sonic the hedgehog, Princess Sally, Tails Prower, and Amy Rose

Overveiw of Mina's love life

One character that seriously has won the heart of Mina is Sonic (Sonic the hedgehog). She admires and adores him and has had held the torch for him quite some time now. They started bonding in issue 76. Mina's mother had been captured, and Mina wanted to go save her before she was roboticized. Sonic stopped this attempt, telling Mina that it was probably too late, and that she would probably risk the same fate. This response upset Mina because she didn't exactly think Sonic would understand how she felt. That is when Sonic told Mina how his parents were roboticized too.

However it was during the 90's regarding the Sonic comic issues that their relationship started to really get into developing. After the 90s, Sonic actually thought of her alongside Sally as girlfriend material when asked about it by his best friend, Tails in issue #111. Yet their developing romantic relationship took a halt in Sonic the hedgehog issue #123. Princess Sally was kidnapped by Nack the Weasel, and Sonic and Mina went to rescue her. When Sally was rescued, she admitted to Sonic that she harbored feelings for him, and after this, the two kissed. Mina would walk in on that kiss and be heartbroken. Mina would also walk in on Nack trying to shoot Sally in the head with his gun. While she had desired to be with Sonic, she nearly sacrificed herself to save Sally so that Sonic could be happy. Fortunately, she didn't exactly die but she was left to try getting over Sonic so that he could sort out what he wanted with Sally.

Mina tried moving on, and would have to try harder when everyone beleived he died a year ago due to an adventure. While beleiving he was dead, she found someone she liked, but was not someone she felt she love. Her manager, now a rival for Sonic's affections, Ash Mongoose. Upon learning that Sonic is alive and well, Mina begins to develop mixed feelings about her new relationship, making Ash feel insecure and hostile towards Sonic. But in issue #144, Mina realizes that she has been acting selfish with Ash, when she writes an anomonys troubled love letter to a local magazine. From the advice the editor(coincidently, Sally Acorn) responds to her with, she decides to give Ash a genuine chance. Although later issues reveal that this doesn't mean she has rid herself of feelings for Sonic.

Finally there is princess Sally. She is competition for Sonic's heart and while most would think this puts Mina and Sally at odds with one another, the princess and the popular music artist are actually good friends. However Sally has become somewhat envious of Mina's relations with Sonic and the things she and Sonic have in common that allow Mina to relate to Sonic in ways Sally cannot. However Bunnie Rabot has been morale support for the princess to help her through the triangle involving her Sonic and Mina. As of recently, its at a standstill. Sally has broken up Sonic. This is because the adventure that caused all to beleive he was dead for a year, made her realize that Sonic could be killed on his adventures. Being she wants to be ensured a future with him, she gave him an ultimatum: Give up adventures or lose her. Sonic has stuck with adventures and so Sally ended her relationship with him. While that left him single and available, Mina still has a new boyfriend and is sorting out her feelings.

The creation of Mina Mongoose (in an editorial sense)

Many years ago, Justin Gabrie (former Sonic editor) wanted to create a new potential love interest for Sonic. He ordered that she be in issue 76. One that would have things in common with him that Sally didn't.Archie's staff chose speed. Of course the speed would end up having to be developed as something described by the artist Fry who had been drawing various issues in Archie comics involving Mina Mongoose had described at the Sonic Powerzone her abilities were more or less like an "X-men-onstage-puberty-awakened" hidden power Mina had because the Sonic Adventure adaptation (ordered by SEGA in hopes of promoting their upcoming game (SEGA also being who gave the license for Archie comics to make Sonic comics thus it was a mandated adaptation) had taken all the time the comics had planned to use to develop Mina's speed.

Because the girl would have speed, Mina was decided to be a mongoose from the get go so that she and Sonic could have something in common, as mongooses are fast creatures. Once it was decided what sort of animal she would be, The ideas for a name were made. The initial name that was thought of for Mina was Chloe. However, Writer Karl Bollers decided to not to give her such a name. Chloe had the hard "e" sound at the end of the name and made her stick in with the rest of the females already established (ex: Amy, Sally, Rosie, Dulcy, Barbie, Julie). So, Karl decided todedicate her name to his grandmother who had been a great influence towards his work, Minerva. He took the name, shortened it and it went from Minerva to Mina. Then finally, Spaz (the main Sonic artist at Archie) apparently made a design of a mauve haired mongoose with yellow fur and green eyes.

Basic hobbies

Mina's pleasures in life seem to be hanging out with friends, particularly Sonic, even with Ash around. She's also seemed to like showers and baths very much and enjoys singing as well.
