Min Jibalina

Min Jibalina is one of the best-known songs of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62); its sweet, almost hymnal tune contrasts oddly with its martial words. Although it sometimes passes the fine line between nationalism and nationolatry, it is a beautiful song.

From our mountains came the cry of the free, calling us to independence,
Calling us to independence, to the independence of our nation.
Our dedication to the nation is more important than life;
I sacrifice my life and my property for thee.
O my nation, O my nation, I love none better than thee;
My heart has forgotten the world, and is lost in thy love.
Every thing in thee grows, its love like a plant:
May there come to thee a day when life blossoms throughout!
We shall defend with our lives every fibre of thy soil:
We are the cubs of lions, so turn us to thine aid.
Thine is a place in history shining over the deeps;
Thine is splendor of scenery, ever announcing thy beauty.
We are as a wall enclosing thee, and mountains stern:
We are the sons of Algeria, a people of resolve and steadfastness.
