Midland is a city located in Midland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 41,685. It is the county seat of Midland County6. A small portion of the city is located in Bay County. The majority of the city is within Midland Township.
The Dow Chemical Company was founded in Midland, and its world headquarters are still located here.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 90.5 km² (35.0 mi²). 86.0 km² (33.2 mi²) of it is land and 4.5 km² (1.7 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.95% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 41,685 people, 16,743 households, and 11,000 families residing in the city. The population density is 484.5/km² (1,254.9/mi²). There are 17,773 housing units at an average density of 206.6/km² (535.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.38% White, 1.82% African American, 0.29% Native American, 2.69% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 16,743 households out of which 33.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% are non-families. 28.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $48,444, and the median income for a family is $64,949. Males have a median income of $53,208 versus $31,098 for females. The per capita income for the city is $26,818. 8.8% of the population and 5.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
