A microcassette is a smaller format of the compact audio cassette. Microcassettes can only be recorded by microcassette tape recorders used by recording studios or by consumer devices supporting the format and having a recording mode—such as dictaphones and answering machines, which represent the most common uses of microcassettes. Just like compact audio cassettes, there are microcassettes with differing amounts of tape, thus having differing recording time capacities. Both sides can be recorded, i.e. the cassettes have A and B sides as an audio cassette.
The microcassette is mainly used for voice recording but rarely for music.
