Michigan Center is an unincorporated community located in Jackson County, Michigan. It is a Census-designated place (CDP) used for statistical purposes. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 4,641.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²). 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 8.48% water.
Michgian Center is centered around a water dam that drains the end of a chain of 7 small lakes. Local residents travel between these lakes on small boat and personal watercraft (i.e. JetSkis and kiaks).
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,641 people, 1,856 households, and 1,308 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 345.9/km² (895.6/mi²). There are 1,961 housing units at an average density of 146.2/km² (378.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.72% White, 0.34% Black or African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,856 households out of which 29.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.1% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 30.3% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 101.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.8 males.
