Michael Gough (born November 23 1917 in Malaya) is an English character actor. He is perhaps best known to international audiences from his recurring role as Alfred Pennyworth in four Batman movies, beginning with Batman (1989).
He has guest-starred on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who, most notably as the villain in the serial The Celestial Toymaker. He also appeared in the Doctor Who story Arc of Infinity as Councillor Hedin. He was once married to Anneke Wills, who played the Doctor's companion Polly.
Gough made his film debut in 1947, and has appeared extensively on British television. He has also provided the voice of a gopher in several of the Walt Disney cartoons based on the Winnie the Pooh stories.
He has cult status nowadays among horror fans, due to his frequent appearances in sixties British horror films such as Horror of Dracula (Hammer Films, 1958), Horrors of the Black Museum (1960) and The Phantom of the Opera (another Hammer, 1962). His later roles for director Tim Burton are best seen as an homage to his early horror career.
