Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (Senjou no Merii Kurisumasu) is a 1983 movie directed by Nagisa Oshima and starring David Bowie, Tom Conti, Ryuichi Sakamoto, and Takeshi Kitano. It is based on World War II experiences as a prisoner of war of the writer Laurens van der Post as told in his works The Seed and the Sower (1963) and The Night of the New Moon (1970). It deals with the prisoner of war camps, and the tense relations between the captors and the captives, including the strange sexual tension between Bowie and Sakamoto's characters, as they find meeting points among the chaos, and the simpler relationship between Kitano and Conti's characters as they seek to understand each other's culture.
