Merrick, New York

Merrick is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Nassau County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 22,764. The name Merrick is taken from "Meroke", the name (meaning peaceful) of the Iroquois tribe formerly indigenous to the area.

Geography

Merrick is located at 40°39'34" North, 73°33'13" West (40.659475, -73.553608)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²). 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 19.27% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 22,764 people, 7,524 households, and 6,478 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,092.7/km² (5,423.3/mi²). There are 7,602 housing units at an average density of 698.8/km² (1,811.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 95.18% White, 0.56% African American, 0.10% Native American, 2.24% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.94% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 3.70% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,524 households out of which 42.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 76.0% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 13.9% are non-families. 11.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.02 and the average family size is 3.27.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $93,132, and the median income for a family is $99,589. Males have a median income of $69,607 versus $41,618 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $36,334. 2.8% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.6% of those under the age of 18 and 2.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Several celebrities have come out of Merrick, including singer Deborah_Gibson, actress Lindsay_Lohan, the founders of Ben_and_Jerry's ice cream, lolita Amy_Fisher, Brand_New drummer Brian Lane, and Mario_Puzo, the writer of the novel "The Godfather" (later adapted to film by Francis_Ford_Coppola), actor Brian_Bloom, inline skater Dustin_Halleran.
