Mentor, Ohio

Mentor is a city located in Lake County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 50,278.
In 1876 James A. Garfield purchased a home in Mentor, from which he conducted the first successful front porch campaign for the presidency. That home is now maintained as the James A Garfield National Historic Site.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 72.7 km² (28.1 mi²). 69.3 km² (26.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.67% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 50,278 people, 18,797 households, and 14,229 families residing in the city. The population density is 725.2/km² (1,878.2/mi²). There are 19,301 housing units at an average density of 278.4/km² (721.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.30% White, 0.64% African American, 0.05% Native American, 1.19% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.72% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 18,797 households out of which 35.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.6% are married couples living together, 8.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% are non-families. 20.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.9% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $57,230, and the median income for a family is $65,322. Males have a median income of $44,021 versus $31,025 for females. The per capita income for the city is $24,592. 2.7% of the population and 1.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 4.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
