The contest has always been very popular in Sweden, but since a series of 4 semi-finals and 1 "second chance round" were introduced in 2002, the contest has beaten all Swedish television viewing records as the most watched program of the year, often second only to the Eurovision itself. A scandal erupted in 2005 when the favourite with the fans and the bookmakers, "Håll Om Mig" by Nanne Grönvall (who was part of the winning group, One More Time, in 1996) didn't win the contest despite overwhelmingly winning the televote - the juries rather oddly (some would say tactically) voted so that the much weaker "Las Vegas" by Martin Stenmarck won the contest. This turned into a media frenzy and a lot of discontentment on the part of Swedish music lovers, and the rest of Europe seemed to agree as Martin ended =19th in the Eurovision final, Sweden's lowest placing since 1992. Because of this scandal, Melodifestivalen organizers promise changes to the final voting system in 2006 where the televote will be more heavily weighted than the jury results.
