The Mega Man Legends (Rockman DASH in Japan; "DASH" meaning "Digouter's Adventure Story in Halcyon Days") series was at first regarded to be strange by fans of other Mega Man games. Some skeptics who played the games, soon grew to love the characters and plot, which developed over time to become something beyond anything seen in any other Rockman series. At first, it was thought to have no connection to the Classic, X, or Zero series at all until the sourcebook for all Rockman series was released.

According to the sourcebook, Rockman Perfect Memories, it was stated that the Legends series takes place after the X series (or more logically the Zero series) and some have even speculated on such a connection based on comments in the X series, most notably the use of the word "Elysium" (with a capital E, indicating that it's a name) in one the endings of Mega Man X5). As well as the frequently seen "Reaverbot eye" symbols that appear in Hyleg Ourobockle and Burble Hekelot's level in Mega Man Zero 2, Hanumachine's level in Mega Man Zero 3.

Gameplay

The player controls MegaMan Volnutt, a teenage boy. MegaMan is a Digger; an archaeologist of sorts who searches underground ruins mainly for Quantum Refractors, which is the civilization's primary source of energy. He was found on an island as a baby and was raised by Professor Barrel Caskett along with his granddaughter, Roll Caskett. Contrary to popular belief, MegaMan and Roll are not incestful, as they are not related in any way (not even by adoption). Giving them trouble are the Bonnes, a group of pirates consisting of leader Tiesel Bonne, his sister Tron (who is, ironically, infatuated with MegaMan), the large "baby" robot Bon Bonne (known primarily for his oft-repeated line "Babu!" which has become a catch phrase among the series' fans), and the 40 Servbots (which vaguely resemble Lego figures), as well as the Reaverbots, the techno-organic semi intelligent residents of the ruins who serve to protect its contents. There are only two main Mega Man Legends games at present (the first is available for PlayStation, N64, and PC, though the second is for to the PlayStation, a PC version of Legends 2 was released only in Japan), plus a spinoff PlayStation game called The Misadventures of Tron Bonne which is actually a prequel to Mega Man Legends, stars Tron Bonne, and the 40 Servbots, in a quest to rescue Tiesel and Bon Bonne.

Notes

Mega Man Legends is the first 3D Mega Man game.

Mega Man Legends was also released on the Nintendo 64 in 2000, retitled Mega Man 64. A port to the PlayStation Portable is currently being developed.

Extremely early in the localization of Rockman DASH for America, Mega Man Legends was going to be called Mega Man Nova and then Mega Man Neo.

A spinoff/prequel game called The Misadventures of Tron Bonne was released for the PlayStation. It allowed the player to play as one of the villians of the series, Tron Bonne.

Cameos

  • Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Sega Dreamcast, arcade 2000, PlayStation 2 2001, Xbox 2001): Servbot and Tron Bonne are playable characters.
  • Auto Modellista (PlayStation 2): Servbots appear in the workshop.
  • MegaMan Battle Network series (Game Boy Advance): The servbot can be seen as a doll in Mayl's house. There is also a reference made to a television series called "The Bonne Bunch" (probably a parody of The Brady Bunch)
  • Namco X Capcom (PlayStation 2): Megaman Volnutt, Roll Casket, Kobun (Servbot), Tron Bonne and even MegaMan Juno appears in the company crossover game recently released in Japan. However, it is uncertain or confirmed if they will play a major or minor role in the game. However, anything is possible since creator Keiji Inafune will be directly involved in the development of the game. But since Namco/Capcom did not announce plans to release this games to the States (As well as the mostly obscure/cult-in-America cast and lack of more mainstream series such as Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe), chances of seeing this game outside of Japan are somwhow slim.
