Mechanicstown is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Orange County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 6,061.
Mechanicstown is in the Town of Walkill, south of City of Middletown.
Geography
Mechanicstown is located at 41°26'58" North, 74°23'39" West (41.449568, -74.394114)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.8 km² (3.4 mi²). 8.6 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.06% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,061 people, 2,241 households, and 1,479 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 702.8/km² (1,821.9/mi²). There are 2,311 housing units at an average density of 268.0/km² (694.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 72.41% White, 13.91% African American, 0.45% Native American, 2.85% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 6.90% from other races, and 3.38% from two or more races. 19.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,241 households out of which 33.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.0% are married couples living together, 14.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.0% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.18.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.8% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 29.1% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who are 65 years of age or older.
