McLean, Virginia

McLean is an unincorporated community located in Fairfax County, Virginia. Recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau as a census designated place (CDP), the community had a total population of 38,929 as of the 2000 census.
The heavily wooded town of McLean is located between the George Washington Parkway and the town of Vienna and is known for its upscale homes and small town atmosphere despite its proximity to the capital. The area is also well-known for its shopping and upscale malls including the nearby Tyson's Corner malls and the Galleria. McLean is also home to many diplomats and government employees. McLean was founded in 1910 when the communites of Lewinsville and Langley merged. The town is named after John R. McLean who was the publisher of the Washington Post.
The community of Langley is a part of McLean.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 47.9 km² (18.5 mi²). 47.9 km² (18.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 38,929 people, 14,374 households, and 11,053 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 812.9/km² (2,104.9/mi²). There are 14,735 housing units at an average density of 307.7/km² (796.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 84.56% White, 1.58% African American, 0.10% Native American, 10.61% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 2.44% from two or more races. 4.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,374 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.3% are married couples living together, 6.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.1% are non-families. 18.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.70 and the average family size is 3.05.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 4.0% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 31.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 92.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $121,138, and the median income for a family is $137,610. Males have a median income of $93,065 versus $60,698 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $63,209. 1.9% of the population and 0.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.0% of those under the age of 18 and 2.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
