Maywood is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 26,987.
Long a blue collar community, Maywood has seen a severe increase in crime in past years. During the year of 2003, the city witnessed 20 murders, a 10 murder increase from 2002 and a 12 murder increase from 2001. The city has one of the highest crime rates of any suburb in Chicagoland.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 26,987 people, 7,937 households, and 6,151 families residing in the village. The population density is 3,844.9/km² (9,965.7/mi²). There are 8,475 housing units at an average density of 1,207.5/km² (3,129.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 9.73% White, 82.66% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 5.56% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 10.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,937 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.7% are married couples living together, 30.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.5% are non-families. 19.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.38 and the average family size is 3.84.
In the village the population is spread out with 31.7% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $41,942, and the median income for a family is $46,776. Males have a median income of $31,638 versus $27,316 for females. The per capita income for the village is $14,915. 13.4% of the population and 11.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
