Mayfield is a town located in Fulton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,432.

History
The town was established in 1793 from the old Town of Caughnawaga in Montgomery County, New York.
Geography
Mayfield is within the Adirondack State Park on the southwest shore of Great Sacandaga Lake.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 167.5 km² (64.7 mi²). 151.3 km² (58.4 mi²) of it is land and 16.2 km² (6.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.68% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,432 people, 2,535 households, and 1,804 families residing in the town. The population density is 42.5/km² (110.1/mi²). There are 3,211 housing units at an average density of 21.2/km² (55.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.99% White, 0.39% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,535 households out of which 32.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.7% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 23.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 2.95.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 26.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $37,982, and the median income for a family is $42,289. Males have a median income of $30,326 versus $22,105 for females. The per capita income for the town is $17,972. 8.6% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
