Marmara University is one of the leading universities in Turkey. The university has several different locations in the city of Istanbul. It distinguishes itself being the only higher educational institution in Turkey that is multilingual.
Marmara University has roots extending back into the 19th century as a school of commerce of high reputation. It became a modern university in 1982, when the school of commerce was consolidated with several other professional schools offering study of medicine, dentistry, law, and fine arts. To these were added faculties of arts and sciences, education, and foreign languages to provide a full complement of courses for university studies. Marmara University now has five main campuses, approximately 2,200 academic staff and some 20,000 students, including about 500 foreign students.
