Margraten is a municipality and a town in the southeastern Netherlands.
In Margraten is Europe's third large war cemetery for American soldiers who died in World War II. 8,302 soldiers are buried there under long rows of white crosses and stars of David. All graves are adopted by locals, who attend the graves and lay flowers every now and then. At the 60th anniversary of Europe's liberation (May 8th, 2005), US president George W. Bush visited the cemetery and paid tribute, saying: "On this peaceful May morning, we commemorate a great victory for liberty." "Each man or woman buried here is more than a headstone and a serial number."
