Marathon is a town located in Cortland County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,189.

The Town of Marathon contains a village of Marathon. The town is on the south border of the county.

Geography

The south town line is the border of Broome County, New York. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 64.9 km² (25.1 mi²). 64.7 km² (25.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

US Route 11 and Interstate Highway 81 cross the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,189 people, 814 households, and 598 families residing in the town. The population density is 33.8/km² (87.7/mi²). There are 861 housing units at an average density of 13.3/km² (34.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.49% White, 0.73% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 814 households out of which 39.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.5% are non-families. 21.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 30.7% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 21.5% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $34,274, and the median income for a family is $40,379. Males have a median income of $29,781 versus $22,125 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,322. 10.9% of the population and 8.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Dean Pond -- A small lake east of Marathon village.
  • Galatia -- A hamlet on the north town line.
  • Marathon -- The Village of Marathon is in the west part of the town adjacent to Routes 11 and Interstate 81.
  • Texas Valley -- A hamlet in the northeast corner of the town.
