Manuel Vázquez Montalbán (June 14, 1939 - October 18, 2003) was a Spanish journalist, poet and novelist, mainly known for his novels featuring Pepe Carvalho, a Barcelona private investigator of Galician origin.
He started out in 1967 as a poet, and his poetical work up to 1986 is published as Memoria y deseo (Memory and desire).
He was a Communist. He was well known as a gastronomer, as was Carvalho, and some of the books contain recipes.
For many years, he contributed columns and articles to the Madrid daily newspaper El País.
He died in Bangkok, Thailand, while returning to his home country from a speaking tour of Australia.
