Malietoa Tanumafili II (born January 4, 1913) is the head of state (O le Ao o le Malo) of Samoa. He is a constitutional monarch. He was Joint-head of state shortly (1962-1963) with Tupua Tamasese. It is not surely known who will be his successor. There are 3 possible candidates. As of May 2005, Malietoa Tanumafili is the third-longest reigning monarch in the world after the King of Thailand and Queen Elizabeth II, he comes from Samoa's four royal families and carries with him the four paramount royal titles. His successor must get all the four titles in order to become the Tafaifa or monarch of Samoa.
King Malietoa Tanumafili II is the first reigning monarch of Samoa who is a Bahá'í and the second worldwide after Queen Marie of Romania. The Bahá'í House of Worship in Tiapapata, eight km from Apia, Samoa, was dedicated by him in 1984.
