Major William Martin
|
Fictitious name of the dead British officer released in the sea off Spain as part of Operation Mincemeat during World War II. Nominally a member of the British Royal Marines, the body was from a young man who died of pneumonia. His family agreed to the use of the body, despite not knowing more than it was needed for a secret purpose vital to the war, with the understanding that "Major Martin"'s real name would never be released, and the body would receive a proper burial. (He was buried in Spain with full millitary honors.)
