Maizuru (舞鶴市; Maizuru-shi) is a city located in Kyōto, Japan, on an inlet of the Sea of Japan.
As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 93,888 and the density of 274.44 persons per km². The total area is 342.11 km².
The city was founded on May 27, 1943.
Maizuru is a city of rich nature. Especially the scene from the Maizuru bay is an unparalleled view. A harbor is located to the Maizuru bay and it can go to Hokkaido via the Sea of Japan.
History
Maizuru developed greatly, after the naval port was installed in 1901. In the Russo-Japanese War, many warships went to the Sea of Japan. Even if the Pacific War ended on August 15, 1945, the Soviet Union army attacked the Japanese army unfairly, and detained many Japanese unlawfully. After Maizuru became the base of return movement of an illegal detained person and the Soviet Union accepted Japan's demand, the Maizuru harbor accepted the returnee from the Soviet Union over 13 years.
Sightseeing
Maizuru is dotted with the sightseeing spot. There is a commemoration hall which records return movement of an illegal detained person other than the observatory which can overlook the Rias seashore of the Maizuru bay.
