Original UK 45 rpm single picture cover: Magazine - Shot By Both Sides

Magazine was a UK post punk band formed in 1977 by Howard Devoto after he left the Buzzcocks, its original lineup included John McGeoch, Barry Adamson, Bob Dickinson, and Martin Jackson.

Magazine were one of the earliest punk rock groups to embrace the more experimental feel that would come to dominate the post punk movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s. While the group kept much of the nervous, paranoid drive of early punk, both the lyrics and the music were weirder than typical punk rock, filled with strange poetic imagery, shards of keyboard and a point of view nearly as introverted as fellow early post punk trailblazers like Joy Division. Although never the biggest group in the punk scene and relatively unknown in America, they had a great deal of influence on the post punk scene, and continue to be an influence even today (Radiohead in particular draws on the lyrical style of the group).
