Madison is a city located in Jefferson County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,004. The city is the county seat of Jefferson CountyTemplate:GR.
Geography
Madison is located at 38°45'0" North, 85°23'43" West (38.750089, -85.395394)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.0 km² (8.9 mi²). 22.2 km² (8.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.72% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 12,004 people, 5,092 households, and 3,085 families residing in the city. The population density is 541.4/km² (1,402.9/mi²). There are 5,597 housing units at an average density of 252.5/km² (654.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.61% White, 2.43% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 1.42% from two or more races. 1.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any racesetter.
There are 5,092 households out of which 26.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.4% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.83.
