Madelia is a city located in Watonwan County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,340.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.2 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,340 people, 911 households, and 571 families residing in the city. The population density is 722.8/km² (1,876.4/mi²). There are 1,000 housing units at an average density of 308.9/km² (801.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 85.47% White, 0.64% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 11.88% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 20.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 911 households out of which 33.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% are non-families. 34.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.16.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 18.5% from 45 to 64, and 20.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 89.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $34,219, and the median income for a family is $41,167. Males have a median income of $29,417 versus $19,806 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,266. 9.7% of the population and 8.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 8.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Education
The Madelia Community Schools service approximately 650 students in Kindergarten through the 12th grade. The district maintains two buildings - a K-6 elementary school and a 7-12 junior-senior high school. The community reinforced its support of education in 1999 when it passed a bond referendum that funded the contruction of an addition to the elementary school, demolition of the 1913 elementary school addition, and renovation of the 1949 and 1965 additions.
The district offers a progressive curriculum that includes advanced mathematics and science, CAD, and computer programming. The Madelia Community Schools have invested heavily in technology and utilizes it as a vital tool in its classrooms K-12.
