Machias is a town located in Cattaraugus County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,482.
The Town of Machias is in the northeast corner of the county.

History
The Town of Machias was incorporated in 1827, formed from the Town of Yorkshire.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 106.5 km² (41.1 mi²). 105.2 km² (40.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.24% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,482 people, 906 households, and 654 families residing in the town. The population density is 23.6/km² (61.1/mi²). There are 1,354 housing units at an average density of 12.9/km² (33.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.78% White, 0.16% African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.32% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 906 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% are married couples living together, 7.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.8% are non-families. 22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the town the population is spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $33,553, and the median income for a family is $39,301. Males have a median income of $30,217 versus $21,652 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,367. 12.8% of the population and 10.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.7% of those under the age of 18 and 19.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- Fancy Tract -- A location on the west town line.
- Lime Lake -- This hamlet settled around a small lake, which itself is called Lime Lake. Lime Lake is on Route 16 in the northeast part of the town.
- Machias -- the principal hamlet and business district is the town in on Route 16 in the east part of the town.
- Machias Junction -- A hamlet southeast of Machias.
