Novels
M*A*S*H: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, the original novel that inspired M*A*S*H was written by Richard Hooker and was about a U.S. mobile army surgical hospital in Korea during the Korean War. The book was followed by two sequels.
The film
A film titled simply M*A*S*H was released in 1970. The film was directed by Robert Altman and won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In 1984, a spin-off film titled W*A*L*T*E*R was released, featuring the character Walter (Radar) O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff) in the police force. W*A*L*T*E*R was directed by Bill Bixby and was the pilot for a television series that wasn't picked up.
The television series
The television series M*A*S*H ran from 1972 until 1983 and featured Alan Alda as the lead character, Hawkeye Pierce. A failed spin-off titled AfterMASH ran from 1983 to 1985.
