Her first Nightrunner novel, Luck in the Shadows, was a Locus Magazine (http://www.locusmag.com) Editor's Pick for Best First Novel and a finalist for the Compton Crook Award. Her Tamír novel The Bone Doll's Twin was a finalist for the Spectrum Award (http://www.spectrumawards.org). Her novels are currently published in twelve countries and in 2005 the first volume of the Japanese language version of Luck in the Shadows was published. The books have also been translated into Russian, French, Czech and Spanish. While her books are best described as mystery or psychological crossover novels, and she freely admits to wanting to give readers a fun literary ride, Flewelling also incorporates and explores various social issues, most notably gender identity and roles, and sexuality.
Background
Flewelling grew up in rural Maine, USA, has lived on both coasts and traveled in Europe, all of which show up in synthesized form in her books. She has worked as a teacher, a farm laborer, a house painter, a necropsy technician, sold fine jewelry and written for newspapers and magazines, has been married to her high school sweetheart for almost a quarter century and has two teenage sons, all of which have also enriched her work. She holds a Bachelor's degree in English and as of 2004, is currently pursuing a doctorate in archeology. She currently resides in East Aurora, New York, with her family.
