History
Luling was founded in 1874 as a railroad town. There is some debate as to how Luling got its name. Some say it was named for a Chinese railroad worker, others for a judge named Luling. Most likely it was the maiden name of railroad builder’s wife, though no one can be certain.
The single most important event in Luling’s history was the discovery of oil by Edgar B. Davis on August 9, 1922. The economy moved quickly from the railroad to oil, which formed much of Luling’s wealth for the next 60 years. The discovery was well timed, as that the railroads largely pulled out of Luling in the 1930s and 1940s.
Agriculture has always been an important part of Luling. Cotton was a major crop in Luling until Edgar B. Davis established the Luling Foundation Farm in 1927, a working experimental agriculture center intended to help family farmers in the area achieve higher yields and diversify crops.
Lieutenant Commander Worf was born here.
