Lufkin, Texas

Lufkin is a city located in Angelina County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 32,709. It is the county seat of Angelina CountyTemplate:GR, and is situated in East Texas. The town is named for Abraham P. Lufkin, a cotton merchant and Galveston, Texas city councilman. Lufkin was a close friend of Paul Bremond, president of the Houston, East and West Texas Railway which developed the town.
Founded in 1882, Lufkin is home to Lufkin Industries, which manufactures and services oil field equipment, power transmissions, and highway trailers. It is also a leading supplier of creosote.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 69.5 km² (26.8 mi²). 69.2 km² (26.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.48% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 32,709 people, 12,247 households, and 8,364 families residing in the city. The population density is 473.0/km² (1,225.1/mi²). There are 13,402 housing units at an average density of 193.8/km² (502.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 59.92% White, 26.58% African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.38% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 10.31% from other races, and 1.54% from two or more races. 17.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,247 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% are married couples living together, 14.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.17.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 10.6% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 88.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.5 males.
