Ludlow is a town located in Hampden County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 21,209. It is located in southern Massachusetts, north of Springfield.
History
Ludlow was first settled in 1750 and was officially incorporated in 1775.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 73.1 km² (28.2 mi²). 70.3 km² (27.1 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.83% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,209 people, 7,659 households, and 5,514 families residing in the town. The population density is 301.6/km² (781.2/mi²). There are 7,841 housing units at an average density of 111.5/km² (288.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.78% White, 2.04% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.31% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 6.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. Ludlow is known primarily as a Portuguese-American community, with more people in the town claiming that ancestry than any other. Polish-Americans are second.
There are 7,659 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.6% are married couples living together, 10.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the town the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 105.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 106.1 males.
