Lowell is a small developing town located in Lake County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 7,505.

Geography

Lowell is located at 41°17'33" North, 87°24'54" West (41.292370, -87.415131)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.92% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,505 people, 2,697 households, and 2,030 families residing in the town. The population density is 710.2/km² (1,839.2/mi²). There are 2,809 housing units at an average density of 265.8/km² (688.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.30% White, 0.03% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.12% from other races, and 0.92% from two or more races. 3.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,697 households out of which 39.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.2% are married couples living together, 10.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.7% are non-families. 20.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $49,173, and the median income for a family is $54,797. Males have a median income of $45,023 versus $23,378 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,752. 6.5% of the population and 5.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Timeline

1837 -- On Feb 16 Lake County became an independent county. 1839 -- On May 9 the south township of Lake County was divided into the townships of West Creek, Cedar Creek, and Eagle Creek. 1852 -- The town of Lowell was laid out. 1868 -- Lowell was incorporated on June 10, 1868. 1968 -- A planning commission was formed. 1969 -- A zoning ordinance was prepared.

Famous People

Joanne Worley was born here. Lance Armstrong rode through it in Late 2004.
