Loos-in-Gohelle is a commune of northern France. Population (1999): 6,992.

Administration
Loos-en-Gohelle is located in the Pas-de-Calais département. It belongs to the communauté d'agglomération of Lens-Liévin (Communaupole) which gathers 36 communes, and has a population of 250,000 inhabitants. Its nearest communes are Lens to the south, Grenay to the west, Hulluch to the northeast and Bénifontaine to the east.

History
The place was first mentioned in 1071, as "Lohes". The village was entirely destroyed in 1917.
During World War I the town was recaptured in October 1915 by British forces from the Germans with tremendous losses.
Miscellaneous
Loos-en-Gohelle is an old mining city. One finds there the highest carboniferous spoil heaps in Europe.
