Lodi (town), New York

Lodi is a town located in Seneca County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,476.

The Town of Lodi is in the southwest part of the county.

History

The town was set apart from the Town of Covert in 1826. The first settler had arrived around 1789.

Geography

The west town line, delineated by Seneca Lake is the border of Yates County, New York, and the south town line is the border of Schuyler County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 103.0 km² (39.8 mi²). 88.8 km² (34.3 mi²) of it is land and 14.2 km² (5.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 13.76% water.

Located on the Eastern shore of Seneca Lake, Lodi is home to award winning vineyards and accompanying wineries.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,476 people, 559 households, and 395 families residing in the town. The population density is 16.6/km² (43.0/mi²). There are 812 housing units at an average density of 9.1/km² (23.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 95.87% White, 0.47% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 0.95% from other races, and 1.63% from two or more races. 2.17% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 559 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.3% are non-families. 22.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.3% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 107.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,414, and the median income for a family is $40,972. Males have a median income of $28,657 versus $23,882 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,640. 15.8% of the population and 10.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.5% of those under the age of 18 and 11.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
