Lockhart, Texas

Lockhart is a city located in Caldwell County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,615. It is the county seat of Caldwell CountyTemplate:GR. Located in central Texas, Lockhart is southeast of Austin. It was the site of a victory of the Texans over the Comanche, at the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840.

Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,615 people, 3,627 households, and 2,691 families residing in the city. The population density is 398.6/km² (1,032.7/mi²). There are 3,871 housing units at an average density of 132.9/km² (344.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 65.42% White, 12.68% African American, 0.67% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 18.00% from other races, and 2.82% from two or more races. 47.41% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,627 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% are married couples living together, 16.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.8% are non-families. 21.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.81 and the average family size is 3.28.
In the city the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 32.1% from 25 to 44, 18.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who are 65 years of age or older.
