Lock Haven is a city located in Clinton County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,149. It is the county seat of Clinton CountyTemplate:GR. Located in northern Pennsylvania, on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River, and southwest of Williamsport, the city of Lock Haven is home to Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania. It was settled in 1769.
Geography
Lock Haven is located at 41°8'4" North, 77°27'1" West (41.134388, -77.450347)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.9 km² (2.7 mi²). 6.5 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.64% water.
Named after its reputation during the logging age to be a resting place in the canals and locks. Thus, appropriately it became known as Lock Haven, a "haven in the locks". Logs would travel down the West Branch of the Susquehanna to Lycoming county where they would make their stop at Williamsport.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,149 people, 3,306 households, and 1,659 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,407.4/km² (3,643.9/mi²). There are 3,565 housing units at an average density of 548.4/km² (1,419.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.26% White, 1.43% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.82% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.43% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,306 households out of which 24.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 32.0% are married couples living together, 14.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 49.8% are non-families. 37.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.21 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the city the population is spread out with 16.7% under the age of 18, 33.2% from 18 to 24, 20.3% from 25 to 44, 14.4% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 25 years. For every 100 females there are 82.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 78.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $20,731, and the median income for a family is $28,619. Males have a median income of $27,310 versus $18,463 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,948. 30.2% of the population and 18.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.4% of those under the age of 18 and 11.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
