Livingston, Scotland
|
Livingston is a 1960s new town in West Lothian, Scotland, and, although closer to Edinburgh, was originally intended to ease over-crowding in Glasgow.
Livingston was the fourth of Scotland's five new towns built after the Second World War and building began in 1965. The local economy was, for some time, based around technology, with several multi-national companies including Motorola having factories located there. The largest employers are now the retail sector and the National Health Service.
Livingston was built around two villages, Livingston Village and Livingston Station (now called Deans South). It consists of the following areas Craigshill, Howden, Dedridge, Ladywell, Knightsridge, Murieston, Deans & Eliburn. In addition some of the neighbouring villages have also been incorporated into the town including [[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pumpherston%2C_West_Lothian&action=submit)]Pumperston, Uphall Station, East Calder, Mid Calder and Bellsquarry. Livingston's basic population is 41,647 according to the 2001 census, making it the 13th largest town or city in Scotland.
Livingston is located approx. 10 miles west of Edinburgh and 30 miles east of Glasgow. It is bordered by the towns of Broxburn to the east and Bathgate to the west. Livingston is the largest town in the West Lothian Area.
Livingston features one of the largest shopping areas in Scotland, with the original Almondvale Shopping Centre being expanded in 1995 as well as a McArthurGlen Retail Outlet being added in 1999.
