Live with Regis and Kelly (1988-2000 title: Live with Regis and Kathie Lee; mid-2000 title: Live with Regis) is an American television talk show, hosted by Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa. The show was formerly known as Live with Regis and Kathie Lee when Kathie Lee Gifford was the co-host, and briefly, Live with Regis when Philbin hosted alone or with several guest hosts, including future co-host Kelly Ripa. The show is aired throughout the US each weekday, either live at 9 am ET (as in its home market of New York City) or recorded.
The show began in 1983 as "The Morning Show", a local New York program produced by WABC-TV where it shares the same studio as Eyewitness News. In 1987 Buena Vista Television began syndicating the show nationwide. Not seen in the nationally syndicated show is a WABC Eyewitness News update, which is produced from their newsroom, as all of their updates during Good Morning America are due to the shared studio situation.
The theme and other music for the show was composed by award winning composer Shelly Palmer, who also did the current "Channel 7 Late Movie" theme for WABC.
The show features bantering between Regis and Kelly, phone-in contests, and celebrity guests. It is produced by Michael Gelman. The first 15 minutes, known as "Host Chat," is known for being improvised, often involving Gelman somehow.
The British television series Today with Des and Mel is based off of Regis and Kelly.
